So many, many moons ago, I was backpacking in Venice. I had expected only to find a tourism town, but hey, canals and gondolas. Everyone has to take a gondola ride, even if you’re like me and deathly afraid of small boats (and I did, and it was awesome).
But when I stepped out of the train station and onto the harbour, I was in love.
Everything anyone had ever said about Venice was true. It was amazing. Breath-taking. And utterly stole my imagination away.
Coming home in time for NaNoWriMo, I threw away my original plan and, with images of Venice thrumming in my head, decided on a whole new story.
I wasn’t quite sure how the story would proceed. I wrote the first draft in the closest thing I’ve ever come to pantser mode, but I knew some things that must happen:
- It must be set in a fantasy version of Venice
- It must feature an angst-filled, self-hating protagonist, who doesn’t just angst for a few moments, but stays in his pit of wallowing for a while
- It must have a sad ending
In a whirlwind 30 days, I wrote the first draft of God Cursed. Then I set it aside for a few years as I got caught up in other things, like roller derby. But when I saw the file on my computer, I was amazed. Even in a fast draft, there was something amazing here.
So I revised it and started posting chapters on FictionPress and my blog, and a very special few who have become friends loved it. I took it to an editor who tore it apart and forced me to rebuild to make it so much better. This is a completely revised ebook copy, so if you’ve read it, you’ll want to read it again.
And I’m so very happy to share this with you: the God Cursed cover reveal.
(Dun, dun, dun, duh!!!)
Oh yes, when this first came in my email, my jaw literally dropped. I absolutely, absolutely, absolutely love it. Lou Harper did a fantastic job with it!
